Napkins are for Sharing

27 Sep

For my birthday this year, Gram gave me Hilde, the newest member to my crafting family.

What a looker!

Hilde is a Husqvarna sewing machine. For those of you who are curious, according to Wikipedia, Husqvarna is pronounced hʉːskvɑːrna. That linguistic clarification isn’t helpful at all. I start by saying “H” followed by a bunch of “la la la las.” Since I only do this in my head, so far so good. Because of all that, she has the much simpler name of Hilde.

After the inaugural project of hemming a pair of lounge pants (because I’m classy) it was time to move upward. After some contemplation, Hilde and I agreed to make napkins.

Turns out, napkins are the easiest thing EVER to make. If you can cut a square, iron edges and press the power peddle of a sewing machine, you can sew a napkin.

How To Make a 16″ Napkin:

1. Take your fabric and measure out a square 18″ x 18″, then cut.

Just like arts and crafts, kiddos. Arts and crafts.

2. Measure 1 inch in on each side, mark with a pencil. Then use your pencil mark to fold over the fabric and iron down to create a crease. Note – this is a good opportunity to double-check your measurements.

3. Pin down the sides where ironed. Also fold over the corner and pin those down as well.

4. Prep your sewing machine.

I'm very good at threading the bobbin. Very. Good.

5. Stitch the napkin edges. When you go along the corners, back sure to stitch backwards and forwards to hold the folds in place.

If you can figure out how to get your sewing machine to sew backwards, then you are set.

6. Use at your next meal for a delightful punch of color.

Cool, your own sewing machine!! Great looking napkins, I might have to make some fall themed ones. Because I love fall. Did you know that?

Darling!!! I think you should make custom napkins for your wedding. You can give them away as favors 🙂
